I told David Lowery, the one thing this movie has to be is fun. Forrest Tucker is a wonderful, complicated character, so full of life and risk and enjoying danger, but he also is about having fun.
Robert Redford has starred in so many great movies, and he’s directed so many important films as well. He’s quite an individual. He’s also done enormous things for independent filmmakers so his contribution to film has been immense.
Robert Redford is somebody I’ve watched my whole life and more than a few of his films are among my most favorites. He brings something special to playing Forrest Tucker because it’s partly who he is—and it was so fun to watch.
I feel privileged to be among the group of actors who have been fortunate to have worked with Robert Redford and to have experienced his generosity when collaborating together.
Robert Redford is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I’m just glad that I’m in a movie with him.
Robert Redford is a terrific, spontaneous actor. I enjoyed improvising with him.
Robert Redford and Forrest Tucker were always intrinsically related in my mind. I saw all sorts of parallels with the various characters he’s played over the years, but it wasn’t until I worked with him on PETE DRAGON’S that I got to know him personally. That was what allowed me to tailor the part specifically for him.
THE OLD MAN & THE GUN is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.
