Rave reviews are quite literally pouring in for Alejandro Iñárritu's BIRDMAN out of our world premiere at the 71st Venice Film Festival! Not only is the movie currently batting 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but a quick tour around the press present at the event shows nothing but unbridled enthusiasm. Here are some review highlights:
Peter DeBruge for Variety: "A triumph on every creative level, from casting to execution, that will electrify the industry, captivate arthouse and megaplex crowds alike, send awards pundits into orbit and give fresh wings to Keaton’s career."
Todd McCarthy for The Hollywood Reporter: "The film's exhilarating originality, black comedy and tone that is at once empathetic and acidic will surely strike a strong chord with audiences looking for something fresh that will take them somewhere they haven't been before."
Jessica Kiang for Indiewire.com: "Keaton is simply superb throughout to the point that it’s difficult to work out if the film derives its off-kilter energy and arch self-awareness from him or vice versa, as he unerringly negotiates the various aspects of his multifaceted role (not least as a proxy for Iñárritu himself). But then, the entire cast is outstanding, delivering a brilliantly-written script (by Iñárritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr and Armando Bo) that generously gives each of them at least one, and often several killer moments."
Catherine Bray for Hitfix.com: "Keaton brings a likable comeback narrative to the table, and much more importantly, a brilliant performance - count on at least an Oscar nomination for him."
Cath Clarke for Time Out London: "Life is disappointing, his film is saying (it opens with a Carver quote, ‘Did you get what you wanted out of life?'). But it's also beautiful and, at times, unexpected. This film does real justice to that idea: it's dazzling and rambling, intimate and sprawling, and it's carried along by an infectious, off-the-cuff jazz score. As soon as it ends, you'll be dying to fly with it again."
